Die Innovation des polnischen Startups der Energiewende Oort ist, alle Bluetooth-kompatiblen Geräte in einem Haus über den Hub von Oort und mit einer App miteinander zu verbinden und zu steuern. Radio aus, Licht runter dimmen, am Thermostat drehen – das geht bei Oort alles über eine einzige Anwendung, wenn die Geräte über den entsprechenden Standard verfügen. Neben der Software vertreibt Oort intelligente Glühbirnen oder smarte Vorschaltstecker für herkömmliche Steckdosen.
Wir sprachen mit Szymon Janiak, bei Oort für das Marketing und die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit zuständig.
DEZ-Blog: Erklären Sie bitte unseren Lesern, welche Vorteile Ihr System gegenüber anderen Smarthome-Anwendungen hat? Warum sollte ich lieber OORT als ein anderes System verwenden?

Smart basiert. Das ist der vielversprechendste Funkstandard am Markt und bereits in Millionen von Geräten verfügbar. Unsere Lösung zeichnet sich gegenüber anderen Anbietern durch Kompatibilität und Interoperabilität aus. Unser System kann sowohl OORT-Geräte (beispielsweise Smart Bulbs, Smart Beacons und Sensoren) als auch mit Bluetooth Smart kompatible Geräte von Drittanbietern integrieren. Somit sind die Nutzer nicht gezwungen, nur unsere Produkte zu kaufen. Außerdem brauchen sie für die Steuerung ihrer Wohnung oder ihres Hauses keine teuren mobilen Geräte zu kaufen, denn das SmartHub-System von OORT funktioniert unabhängig vom Hersteller und vom Betriebssystem über das Smartphone – man braucht dazu lediglich einen Internetbrowser. Überdies kann OORT mit allen Bluetooth-Smart-Geräten interagieren.
Wird Bluetooth Smart am Markt einen neuen Standard etablieren? Wie reagieren die Hersteller solcher Geräte auf Ihre Innovation?
Bluetooth Smart ist schon jetzt aus verschiedenen Gründen der beste Marktstandard für IoT-Geräte. Erstens ist es auf rund 200 Millionen mobilen Geräten mit iOS oder Android verfügbar, sodass die Nutzer ihre Geräte direkt steuern können. Im Gegensatz zu anderen bereits verfügbaren Standards braucht man für die Grundfunktionen keinen Hub. Zweitens verbraucht es sehr wenig Strom, sodass die Geräte mit einer Akkuladung lange durchhalten. Last but not least ist es mit Beacons, also Signalgebern, kompatibel, und so merken die Nutzer, wie praktisch es ist, eine auf geringen Entfernungen basierende Technologie zu verwenden.
Wie sieht es mit dem geschäftlichen und technischen Hintergrund Ihres Unternehmens aus? Welche grundlegenden Erfahrungen und Kooperationen haben Sie?
Wir sind kein typisches Start-up-Unternehmen. Wir hatten von Anfang an eine Vorstellung davon, was wir machen wollten und wie wir es machen wollten, und wir legten sehr großen Wert darauf, Leute einzustellen, die uns helfen können, diese Vorstellung zu verwirklichen. Radek, unser CEO, hat bereits drei Unternehmen erfolgreich an die Börse gebracht. Er hat schon mehrere erfolgreiche Unternehmen gegründet oder mitgegründet, unter anderen die größte polnische Investmentfirma – einen Online- und Offline-Goldhandel, der innerhalb von zwei Jahren das seit Jahrzehnten bestehende Monopol am Inlandsmarkt brach – und eine führende Interaktivagentur, die drei Jahre nach ihrer Gründung als Nummer sieben des Marktes eingestuft wurde. Was die technische Erfahrung angeht: Adam, unser CTO, hat schon als Grundschüler ganz allein sein erstes Radio gebaut. Im Laufe seiner Karriere war er schon an vielen innovativen Projekten beteiligt, auch bei der Armee und bei der Marine. Er arbeitete an der Konstruktion von HPEC-Lösungen für Radar und Sonar sowie an zahlreichen F&E-Projekten mit. Bei einem dieser Projekte ging es um die Konstruktion elektronischer Bauteile für die Aktive Strömungskontrolle bei Flugzeugen.
Werfen wir einen Blick auf die Zukunft: Wird die Vielfalt der Smarthome-Anwendungen erhalten bleiben, oder steht uns eine ähnliche Monopolbildung bevor wie bei Anbietern von Internetanwendungen wie zum Beispiel Google, Apple und Facebook?
Ich glaube, der Hersteller ist dabei gar nicht der springende Punkt. Die Nutzer wollen bei verschiedenen Unternehmen Geräte kaufen und sie zu einem System kombinieren. Sie wollen nicht an einen bestimmten Anbieter gebunden sein. Letztlich brauchen sie offene Plattformen und offene Standards, die ihnen diese Möglichkeit bieten. Welche Farbe hat die Zukunft? Dank Bluetooth Smart ist sie definitiv blau.
Please clarify the advantages of your system compared to other smart-home applications for our readers. Why should I prefer OORT to other Systems?
OORT is the first system that is exclusively based on Bluetooth Smart – the most promising radio standard on the market – and is already available in millions of devices. Our solution stands apart from other providers thanks to its compatibility and interoperability. The system integrates with both OORT devices (such as smart bulbs, sockets, beacons and sensors) and third-party devices that are Bluetooth Smart-compatible, so users are not locked into purchasing only our products. Users also don’t need to purchase expensive mobile devices to control their homes because the OORT SmartHub system works regardless of the smartphone manufacturer or operating system – it just needs access to an Internet browser. Moreover, OORT is able to interact with all Bluetooth Smart devices.
Will Bluetooth Smart create a new standard on the market? How do the producers of those devices react to your Innovation?
Bluetooth Smart is already becoming the top market standard for IoT devices for several reasons. First of all it’s available in nearly 200+ million iOS and Android mobile devices, so users can control their appliances directly. In contrast to other available standards, it doesn’t need a hub to serve its basic features. Secondly, its energy consumption is extremely low so devices work on a single battery for a long time. Last but not least, it’s compatible with beacons, which allows users to discover advantages of using technology based on proximity.
How does the business and technical background of your enterprise look? Which basic experiences and cooperations do you have?
We are not a typical start-up. From the beginning, we’ve had an idea of what we want to do and how we want to do it, and we’ve put huge emphasis on hiring people who will help us achieve our aims. Our CEO, Radek, has successfully gone through three IPOs of his companies. He has founded or co-founded a few successful businesses such as the biggest Polish investment – an online and offline gold trader, which broke a decades-long monopoly on the local market within two years, or one of the leading interactive agencies which was ranked the 7th on the market three years after its inception. When it comes to technical background, our CTO, Adam, created his first radio all by himself back when he was in primary school. In his career, he has been involved in many innovative projects, even for the army and the navy. He participated in designing HPEC solutions for radars and sonar systems and took part in numerous R&D projects, one of which involved designing electronic devices for Active Flow Control in aviation.
Let’s take a look in the future: Will the variety of smart-home applications on the market stay the same or are we facing a market monopolization which can be compared to providers of internet applications like Google, Apple or Facebook?
I think that the manufacturer is not the key issue. Users want to buy devices from different companies and combine them into one system. They don’t want to be bound to one provider. In the end they will need open platforms and open standards that will give them that opportunity. What’s the colour of the future? Thanks to Bluetooth Smart, it’s definitely blue.
